Over the years, developed Khao Shong the perfect manufacture process to ensure the optimal flavour of the coffee. Committed to nature and to the efficient use of resources this customer also strives to achieve highest quality. He thus was able to establish himself on the market and to win the confidence of various OEM customers for whom he produces today. In the production of coffee mix 3in1 (instant coffee, milk powder and sugar) broken metal particles from processing machines might contaminate the product. And if this coffee mix – as is the case with this customer – is packed in metallized packs it is difficult to detect such metal particles with conventional methods. Energy efficient drive designs for almost every application Materials in winding applications place varied demands on drives: Sometimes the issue is high speeds, sometimes precision and in other applications, the challenge of a large mass. The wide spectrum of materials covers raw paper with a width of up to ten meters over a thin film, to carbon fibre threads with low elasticity and high tensile resistance. Paper webs, for example, are rolled with a diameter of around two metres at high speeds of up to 2,000 m/min. Films are sensitive materials which must be wound or unwound extremely precisely, and the winding of metals adds the issue of heavy masses which influence the winding process. The company BK Giulini based in Ludwigshafen had two RHEWUM screening machines type WAN in operation to classify potassium polyphosphate, a food additive. These screening machines required more maintenance in the last years of operation (35 years in operation so far). With the procurement of new screening machines, BK Giulini again relied on the current screening technology, the good quality and reliability of RHEWUM GmbH. The new high-performance screening machines type WAU significantly optimize both the classification (separation at 1.0 mm) and the maintenance. Due to the high radiation heat caused by the high product temperature, insulation of the machine walls and additional cooling of the external drives were installed. In addition, there was the challenge of retaining the infeed and outfeed components, which meant that the new machines had to be manufactured to a precise fit. One of the end products, CAN (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate), known for its versatility in use, e.g. as preferred application for acid soils, is a widely used fertilizer. However, because of its hygroscopic property it depicts a problem for conventional screens, as they clog quickly. This year RHEWUM GmbH equips the smallest players. This year RHEWUM GmbH equips the smallest players of the handball club of a sports club in Lüttringhausen with jerseys. RHEWUM GmbH encountered great joy and gratitude among the F-Youth handball team. Already three years ago the RHEWUM GmbH has donated jerseys to the B-Youth handball team. This time we supported the smallest players of the club. During our visit of the F-Youth handball team during the training we were warmly welcomed with the new jerseys. We were told that the jerseys had already brought luck in the first use and led to a victory! We wish the players much success this year and a positive development as a team.

After a long tradition the last colliery in Prosper Haniel in Germany has been closed on Friday, 21 December 2018. Thus a long tradition-rich occupation and era came to an end. On the occasion of the closure, an ecumenical service has been held in the Essen Dome, to which the patron saint, the holy Barbara statue, has been brought from a depth of 1,200 metres and to thank the miners for their many years of work. The patron saint was often depicted on miner’s lamps. Such a petroleum lamp, like the one here from RHEWUM, was a duty for the miners to find their way outside in case of a electrical breakdown.

Every year RHEWUM GmbH is committed to non-profit associations in the Berg. City triangle. Every year, the employees of RHEWUM GmbH and the Management are committed to non-profit associations at the Bergisch city triangle production site. In 2018, the donation of 2,000 euros went to the medical child protection centre (German: ärztliche Kinderschutzambulanz e.V.). The Workers Council and Management met with Dorothea Schauf on 18 December 2018 to present the donation cheque. The Remscheid-based association supports children and young people who are affected by physical abuse, neglect and/or sexual violence on a daily basis or who are suspected of such abuse. With the donation we want to take the financial pressure off this great association and wish it all the best for the future.

From 05 to 07 December 2018 our subsidiary RHEWUM India Pvt. Ltd. participated. Last year’s seminar dealt with the topic ”Making Fertiliser Industry Viable and Vibrant”. As a result of the increasing production of cereals and fruit and vegetables, the sustainability of production must be taken into account much more closely in the face of declining acreage and decreasing water resources. At the same time, the variation of fertilizers is becoming increasingly important for agriculture in order to make them sustainable. This year, the FAI (Fertilizer Association of India) Annual Seminar offered the opportunity to discuss key issues with decision-makers from government, industry and other stakeholders. Through our know-how in the processing of phosphate, NPK, nitrogen and potash fertilizers, we made our contribution to the FAI Annual Seminar.

Things are changing rapidly in meat production and the animal feed industry. Consumers have an increasing influence on animal welfare and the feed that the animals are consuming. Several feed additives that were used to control undesired pathogens have already been banned in order to avoid negative effects and to produce a natural and healthy piece of meat. Feed producers are challenged to deliver a healthy feed that is free from undesired pathogens. The natural way to sterilise a product is by means of heat treatment. When making pelletized feed, the heat treatment step takes place during the pelleting process. Mash feed however is usually produced in a cold process, so the absence of undesired pathogens in conventionally produced mash feed cannot be guaranteed. A global pharmaceutical company was looking for a gate to shut off and control the flow of different ingredients into a dry blender. But the gate needed to adhere to the company’s specifications. • The slide gate must provide a positive seal of materials across the gate and to atmosphere. • All metal and polymer materials of construction must be health compliant. • The slide gate must be able to limit initial material flow as the gate is opened, so that downstream equipment is not “flooded.” • The gate’s inlets and outlets must match with existing equipment. The solution was to install a Vortex Clear Action Gate with a Variable Position Open (VPO) assembly. In addition to a superior material seal across the gate and to atmosphere, the Clear Action Gate “self cleans” its seals on the closing stroke. The company now find themselves earning money from its waste. Five years after the initial introduction of the HSM V-Press 860 S at Van hees, “this machine is still running perfectly,” reports Wohlbold. “It has never really given us any problems.” Furthermore it is put to the test since compressing large bags is no easy task. In any case, the material is expansive and the residues are very aggressive: salts, acetate, flavourings, etc. Wohlbold: “Regular maintenance, a deep clean once a year, and on it goes.” Van hees started with one baling press; it now has five HSM V-Press 860s in service.
