New ways of measuring moisture in the process with Ludwig
The determination of product moisture in various processes has always played an important role, be it the moisture measurement of individual raw materials or the entire batch. In the manufacture of products, the exact moisture content is a decisive feature for dimensional accuracy, appearance, feel and durability in order to guarantee the desired quality of the product. Economical and resource-saving In today’s world, which is accompanied by rising energy costs, moisture measurement that is well integrated into the process helps to reduce production costs. Resource-saving handling of bulk materials is fundamental and must be aimed for. In addition, CO2 emissions can be reduced to the necessary minimum in possible drying processes. Optimal measurement under difficult conditions The dielectric microwave measuring head requires direct contact with the measured medium. The high-frequency measuring signals penetrate at least 50 mm into the material to be measured, so that even deeper medium moisture levels are accurately detected and a larger quantity of bulk material is measured. The HF power of the probe absorbed by the measured medium

Vertical paddle mixers that set the standard for others to follow
PAM Vertical Paddle Mixers are efficient and versatile blending machines for batch mixing of free-flowing powders, granules, and pellets. PAM Vertical Paddle Mixers have been used widely in food, enzyme, cosmetics, fine chemicals, & pharmaceutical industries. Permix Vertical Paddle Mixers allow the material particles and ingredients to be mixed with minimal mechanical and thermal stress, which makes this type of mixer a good solution for fragile and heat-sensitive products. How it works PerMix PAM Vertical Mixers are designed with a single shaft with only one ribbon, but is able to provide a multi-dimensional movement of the materials. The ribbon inside the mixing vessel moves the materials upward from the bottom to the top, where the materials then drop by gravity into the center. This generates a good counter flow of the product particles. The ribbon design ensures that the linear speed of the particles are different from here to there, which results in a turbulence flow field. During this continuous operation, material particles and heat are exchanged quickly which leads to a homogeneous product. A

Radar provides the level monitoring solution within a UK paper mill
Radar sensor from UWT is the bespoke solution for content measurement Continuous level monitoring devices regulate and control liquid or solid levels in a processing plant, helping to streamline the operation, eliminate human error and thus maximise overall efficiency. And so level control devices should be and are an investment that needs careful research and consideration to ensure that the investment in such kit is wisely made. Our customer, a large paper mill based in the UK, approached UWT UK Ltd to achieve all the above for the monitoring of their coal silo and in a backwater tank. A mechanical system in the coal silo and ultrasonic technology in the backwater tank had both failed leaving the monitoring task being executed manually using a tape measure dropped in through the tops of the silo and tank. Clearly, it was time to upgrade. So the customer approached UWT UK Ltd to visit and inspect the applications and to advise on a long term, reliable solution within budget. Time & consideration During the site visit the UWT

Mounting of vibration devices without welds or screws Flexible mounting of vibration devices: vacuum instead of welding
Mounting of vibration devices without welds or screws
Flexible mounting of vibration devices: vacuum instead of welding In bulk material handling, vibrators support the material flow by loosening caking, preventing bridging and preventing product jams. Vacuum holders are suitable for flexibly attaching vibrators exactly where they are needed. In the field of vibration technology, technicians, engineers and maintenance engineers in production plants, plant and mechanical engineering are faced with the question of where and, above all, how a vibrator or impactor can be attached to the respective structure in the most effective and favourable way. A fixed connection in the form of a screw connection on a profile or a weld-on plate has the disadvantage that it is no longer possible to simply move it if necessary. This is because the entire bracket, including the screw connection, would always have to be moved. If the vibrator is mounted with a weld-on profile, any subsequent conversion will be relatively time-consuming and costly. Any welding also impairs the surface quality of the containers

Unique screw conveyor for sugar processing company
Diameter 800 mm; capacity 150 tonnes/hour; length 13 meter; rotating around its central inlet point. A unique screw conveyor. Jansen&Heuning designed a screw conveyor to transport sugar for sugar beet company Cosun in Hoogkerk. Cosun Beet Company aims to be the greenest and the most innovative sugar beet processor in the world and our engineers got a chance to contribute to this goal. The sugar is transported to the silos with a transportation system. All sugar is stored in four large silos where each silo is divided into 3 compartments: the core, the inner ring and the outer ring. These compartments are filled evenly. Formerly, the silos were filled using a mobile conveyor belt, however, such a system is never 100% clean and is sensitive to errors. Therefore, our engineers designed a rotating screw conveyor. The screw rests on a slewing ring and a wheelset in the middle, that moves the machine around. The screw conveyor has a diameter of 800 mm and is completely made of stainless steel 304. The filling capacity is approximately 150 tonnes/hour. With a length of 13 meter, this is a

Screening Machines for Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling
As the world gravitates towards sustainable solutions, the recycling of lithium-ion batteries has emerged as a crucial element in our green future. Central to this process is the handling of ’black mass,’ a complex substance that presents unique challenges in recycling and especially screening. Understanding Black Mass Screening Black mass, primarily composed of valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, also contains graphite, which complicates the recycling process. Screening is essential at different stages, such as removing larger metal foils during black mass creation and purifying black mass by removing materials like aluminum and copper. The primary challenge arises from the large fraction of fine graphite particles in black mass, which can be as small as 10 µm. The nature of fine graphite as a sticky, greasy material complicates the process. It tends to adhere to other particles, making separation difficult. Additionally, graphite’s propensity to clog meshes and form agglomerates that move as cakes across screens reduces screening efficiency. Traditional screening methods often struggle

Proven online mass flow measurement now for ATEX Zone 20
The new ATEX zone certification not only enables a wider range of applications, but also greatly enhances the transparency of bulk material handling in highly regulated systems. DYNAmas has been successfully used for many years to measure the throughput of bulk materials, e.g. to control screening machines, grinding plants, dosing and mixing processes, and to fill silos and lorries. Previously, DYNAmas was only approved for ATEX EX zones 1 and 21. The new Bureau Veritas certification now allows use in EX Zone 20 and the corresponding IECEx certification is also available. This means that the robust online gauge can now be used in a wider range of applications, providing greater visibility of bulk solids handling - regardless of the prevailing explosion protection conditions.

Rotary Paddle Level Switch for overfill and dry run protection
The terms ‘functional safety’ and ‘safety integrity level (SIL)’ have occurred more frequently since the publication of the international standard IEC 61508/IEC61511. SIL2 for rotating paddle series Particularly in systems with hazard-causing processes, such as in chemical plants, the consideration of functional safety has become indispensable. On this basis safety-related practices, design principles and error considerations must be met in order to minimize the risk of a dangerous failure. Risk mitigation in accordance with SIL2 The UWT engineers focused on this topic and designed the rotating paddle switch Rotonivo® RN 6000 series according to the normative requirements of functional safety to ensure safety functions in a risk mitigation in accordance with SIL2. Typical safety functions are overfill and dry run protection. Full, demand or empty Depending on the requirements, the Rotonivo® rotary paddle switch is used as a full, demand or empty detector in storage silos or process vessels and is suitable for use in almost all solids. With its simple electromechanical measuring principle it can also be adapted for extreme

Partnership between NETZSCH and ProteinDistillery
Innovative Partnership between NETZSCH and ProteinDistillery paves the way for revolutionary protein production NETZSCH Grinding & Dispersing, a global leader in dry and wet materials processing, and ProteinDistillery, a pioneer in the innovative production of functional protein ingredients, announce their long-term cooperation. This partnership marks a significant step in the development of sustainable and efficient protein sources for use in the food industry. In contrast to conventional, plant-based methods of protein extraction, which are often characterized by inherent taste, suboptimal functional properties such as texture formation and limited digestibility, ProteinDistillery’s approach offers significant advantages. The microorganism-derived functional protein, Prew:tein, is characterized by neutral taste and improved texture qualities. This reduces the need for artificial additives and flavorings that are normally required to modify the taste and texture of plant-based proteins. Key benefits: Reduction in product development costs as well as higher consumer acceptance

Case study: no-entry silo cleaning for soybean storage operator
A leading company in the food industry from Europe presented our BUCHEN-ICS team from Rotterdam with a persistent challenge in their soybean storage facility in South Holland. 1500 m³ of beans stuck Over the past few years, the operation has been struggling with continuous blockage issues in its soybean silo, where approximately 1500 m³ of beans remained immobile despite numerous attempts at solutions. This blockade significantly affected operational processes and had a negative impact on productivity and profitability. When our team took on this project, it was estimated that the silo had reached a blockage level of 100% over several years. Our experts recognized the urgency and complexity of the challenge and were determined to find a solution using the best possible method. The technologies BinDrill and Cardox Over several shifts, the BinDrill technology was used to carefully drill through the compressed soybeans from the top of the silo. This process aimed to create passages within the blockade and loosen the material. Now we employed the powerful Cardox system. This technology rapidly releases liquid carbon dioxide (CO2), breaking

Lödige Maschinenbau at Anuga FoodTec 2024
At Anuga FoodTec Lödige Maschinenbau will be demonstrating, how Ploughshare® and CoriMix® Mixers can be used in in the production of meat substitutes. Vegan meat alternatives made from protein sources such as cereals or pulses require process engineering solutions that enable high throughputs and homogeneous component mixing. As Gebrüder Lödige Maschinenbau GmbH will be demonstrating at this year’s Anuga FoodTec (Stand 10.1 / G091), Ploughshare® and CoriMix® Mixers can meet this requirement at several points in the process chain. The industrial production process for meat substitutes involves a number of stages, from the preparation of protein sources into a protein concentrate or isolate and texturised vegetable proteins: (TVP) through to the finished meat equivalent. Mixing dry additives before extrusion as well as liquids into the extruded TVP play a key role in the quality of the end product. The manufacturing process can generally be carried out continuously or in batch operation. It is also possible to use a combination of both processes in a quasi-continuous operation. The ideal operating mode depends

Schenck Process, a leading specialist for process-critical bulk materials applications, offers the LOGiQ yard management system, a cloud-based software solution that combines efficient truck loading operations with automated weighing of bulk materials. LOGiQ is a proven system in the cement and steel industry. However, the solution is also suitable for yard management in other segments of industrial production. LOGiQ handles all logistical steps from the entry of an authorized truck onto the company premises to the exit in a seamless process. The software system monitors and controls access, supports weighing processes, ensures correct loading and records all relevant data without delays. All information is integrated into the ERP system, for example SAP, to provide up-to-date sales and administrative data. Access is controlled via LOGiQ registration terminals, which are intuitive to use and available in several languages on request. The truck drivers operate these terminals themselves and record their weighing processes and all steps during loading and unloading. The processes run automatically without the need for manual intervention by staff: ”zero-touch fulfillment”. This reduces the susceptibility to errors
