Practical experience with the mortar grinder pulverisette 2 The universal grinder in the modern preparation laboratory for universal grinding (dry or wet)

The mortar grinder pulverisette 2, which has a well proven record over many decades, has recently been updated. Our aim was to improve both handling and the reproducibility of milling trials, so that now - at a constant rpm from 70 (at 50 Hz) - the precisely variable and observable g-force provided by springs and lateral pestle pressure in Nm (Kg) can be maintained for each grinding process.

Comparisons with the previous model (02.1020.00) have shown that the new pulverisette 2 (02.2000.00) is demonstrably more efficient. Of course, this is hardly noticeable in very short grinding times of less than 10 minutes, but in grinding times of 30 minutes using quartz sand we had a 7% higher proportion under 20µm.

For example: each time 50g of quartz sand was ground for 10 minutes respectively or 30 minutes and the particle size distribution was measured using our Laser Particle Sizer analysette 22.

1. old p-2:
a) 10 min: d99 <255 µm, d50 <29.3 µm and 37.9%<20 µm
b) 30 min: d99 <116 µm, d50 <15.5 µm and 57.6%<20 µm

2. new p-2:
a) 10 min: d99<232 µm, d50 <29.3 µm and 38.3%<20 µm
b) 30 min: d99<60 µm, d50 <12.4 µm and 64.3%<20 µm

In this test the g-force/bearing pressure was set at 17.5 kg and the side pestle pressure at 20 kg (corresponds to 2. ring).

As a result of its ease of handling, the mortar bowl can be easily removed from its bayonet clamping without tools and the sample transported in the bowl, thus reducing potential lost of sample.
