The strong development of dust during the filling of powdery bulk goods into open mouth bags or with the use of valve packers is, according to Windmöller & Hölscher, a thing of the past. With the introduction of "OPAL", the latest generation of FFS (Form, Fill and Seal) packaging systems, W&H offers innovative solutions to visitors to the POWTECH (Hall 9, Stand 334). OPAL is the name of a new FFS packaging system which allows even heavily aerated powdery and heavy flowing products which are frequently found in the chemical and building material industry, the food and animal food industry, to be bagged. The OPAL does not use pre-made bags but converts film tubing on a roll. The bags produced are then filled with powdery and dusty products which could so far not be handled by the FFS technolgy. The bagging section of the OPAL is designed as a closed system (patent pending) allowing for minimum air introduction into the product during the filling process. Product supply is via a vertical feed screw. Before filling is started, the bag is positioned under the screw and lifted up until the screw touches the bag bottom.
The feed screw opening remaining below the filling level ("bottom up" filling) during the bagging process, unwanted inclusion of air and formation of dust resulting in dirty sacks, product loss or explosion hazard is thus reliably prevented.
