Sample division is one of the most important laboratory operations in the processing of solids or suspensions. Only in the rarest cases can the analysis be performed without prior sample division.
Errors can occur even at this stage, and are then attributed to the analyser. The cause of the error, however, actually lies in the sample division or even in sampling. If such errors are to be avoided, great importance must be attached to representative sample division. That is to say, the overall quantity must be reduced in such a manner that all physical and chemical properties of the sample material are also represented in the smaller quantities. Only then will a meaningful and unfalsified analysis result be obtained.
